Below you will find Tyler County School’s protocol for student searches moving forward. As superintendent, I would like to apologize to students that the previous search caused anxiety and unanticipated stress. However, I am very concerned for students’ safety and will address the problem actively until it is under control. It is my responsibility to ensure that all students have a safe and harmless learning environment in which to grow. Please understand this will always be my top priority as Tyler County Schools, superintendent. Therefore, after having time to reflect on the previous search and collaborate with county office staff, parents, and Tyler County Board of Education, I have created these procedures to use when doing random searches in our schools. I am sure you have all heard, “It takes a village” we need to all work together as educators, parents, and community members to create a safe, academically challenging, and inviting environment for our students grow. Parents and Guardians, It is my understanding that some parents are upset with the sweep, search, that took place yesterday at Tyler Consolidated Middle School. Please know moving forward that on-person searches will only take place if staff or administration have reasonable cause to search. Parents will be notified that their student is being search and why. Occasional locker, desk , and bookbag searches will continue. Guidelines for theses searches will be provided to parents in the near future. Right now at TCMS/TCHS, we have a problem with vapes and other electronic nicotine devices. These devices can and do allow students to ingest THC and other illegal drugs. We have installed Halo devices in our high school restrooms and will be soon installing them in our middle school restrooms to help monitor vaping in the bathrooms. Requests for Halos came from students that are tired of this happening in our schools. Parents please talk with your students about this issue, students need to know, they have no idea what could be in a vape that someone gives them. Tyler Consolidated Middle School and Tyler County Schools would like to apologize to any student that this experience scared or made uncomfortable. Please know, Tyler County Schools and TCMS did not intent to create unwarranted stress on parents or children. At TCS and TCMS we are trying to create a safe and healthy environment for students and staff. Again our apologies, moving forward we will change this process and continue to look at other measures to try and make Tyler County Schools as safe and healthy as possible for our students.
